Crossmark Application on Jurnal Surya Masyarakat (JSM)

Jurnal Surya Masyarakat (JSM), published by the Institute for Research and Community Service (LPPM), Universitas Muhammadiyah Semarang, is committed to maintaining the integrity, accuracy, reliability, and accessibility of its published scholarly content.

As part of this commitment, JSM adopts the Crossmark initiative developed by Crossref to provide transparent information about the status of published articles and any significant changes made after publication.

What is Crossmark?

Crossmark is a service provided by Crossref that enables readers, researchers, and librarians to identify the current status of published scholarly content. By clicking the Crossmark button associated with an article, readers can determine whether the article has been updated, corrected, retracted, or otherwise modified after its initial publication.

Jurnal Surya Masyarakat (JSM) recognizes the importance of preserving the integrity and completeness of the scholarly record. The journal is committed to maintaining the accuracy of its electronic publications and providing transparent information about significant post-publication updates.

Crossmark also facilitates access to additional publication information, where available, including publication history, editorial policies, and other relevant metadata.

JSM Content and Crossmark

JSM applies the principles of Crossmark to its published scholarly content, particularly peer-reviewed articles reporting community service activities, community engagement programs, educational interventions, technological applications, and other forms of community development.

Crossmark implementation is intended to cover published articles registered with Crossref, including articles that have not undergone any post-publication changes.

The Crossmark button will be displayed on eligible article landing pages and PDF documents as the journal completes the technical implementation of the service.

The presence of the Crossmark button indicates that the publisher is committed to maintaining the scholarly record and informing readers of significant changes to published content.

Post-Publication Updates

JSM recognizes that errors, omissions, or ethical concerns may be identified after an article has been published. When necessary, the journal will take appropriate editorial action to maintain the accuracy and integrity of the publication record.

The following categories of post-publication updates may be applied.

1. Addendum

An addendum is published when additional information is required to supplement a previously published article without invalidating its original findings or conclusions. An addendum may provide important information omitted from the original publication.

2. Correction

A correction is issued when an error is identified in a published article that requires formal clarification or amendment but does not invalidate the principal findings or conclusions.

Corrections may involve inaccurate information, missing details, or other errors that could affect the interpretation of the article.

3. Corrigendum

A corrigendum is published when authors identify an error in their published article that requires correction. Such errors may involve data presentation, descriptions of community service activities, methodological information, or other relevant content.

4. Erratum

An erratum is issued to correct errors introduced during the editorial or production process, including mistakes in formatting, tables, figures, article metadata, or other publication elements.

5. Clarification

A clarification may be published when additional explanation is necessary to prevent misunderstanding or misinterpretation of the information presented in an article.

6. Expression of Concern

An Expression of Concern may be issued when substantial concerns regarding the reliability, originality, or ethical integrity of a published article have been raised but an investigation has not yet reached a definitive conclusion.

The notice may be updated following the outcome of the investigation.

7. Retraction

An article may be retracted when serious errors, unreliable findings, research misconduct, plagiarism, duplicate publication, or significant ethical violations invalidate the integrity of the published work.

Retraction decisions are made by the Editor-in-Chief following an appropriate evaluation of the available evidence.

A retraction notice will clearly identify the affected article and explain the reason for retraction. The original article will normally remain accessible as part of the scholarly record and will be clearly identified as retracted.

Where technically feasible, the PDF version will be marked to indicate its retracted status.

8. Partial Retraction

A partial retraction may be considered when a clearly identifiable portion of a published work is unreliable while the remaining content retains its validity.

The journal will provide an appropriate notice explaining which parts of the publication are affected.

9. Withdrawal

Authors may request withdrawal of a manuscript before publication by submitting a formal written request to the Editor-in-Chief.

The request must include the manuscript title, the reason for withdrawal, and confirmation of agreement from all authors.

Withdrawal requests will be evaluated in accordance with JSM's editorial procedures and publication ethics policies.

For content that has already been publicly disseminated or registered with a DOI, any withdrawal affecting the publication record will be handled transparently, with appropriate notices and metadata updates when applicable.

10. Removal

The removal of published content will be considered only in exceptional circumstances, including serious legal violations, breaches of confidentiality or personal privacy, or substantial risks to public safety.

Where possible, the journal will retain bibliographic metadata and publish a notice explaining the reason for removal.

11. New Version or Replacement

When substantial revisions require the publication of a new version of an article, JSM will ensure that the relationship between the original publication and the updated version is clearly documented.

The original publication record will be preserved wherever possible, and appropriate links or notices will be provided to identify the subsequent version.

Crossmark Update Procedures

JSM is committed to implementing transparent and accountable procedures for managing post-publication changes.

When a potential error or ethical concern is reported, the editorial team will:

  1. Receive and document the report or request.

  2. Evaluate the nature and significance of the reported issue.

  3. Request clarification from the authors or other relevant parties when necessary.

  4. Consult editorial board members, reviewers, or relevant institutions when appropriate.

  5. Determine whether a correction, clarification, expression of concern, retraction, withdrawal, or other editorial action is required.

  6. Publish an appropriate notice for significant post-publication changes.

  7. Register relevant update metadata with Crossref in accordance with Crossmark requirements.

Significant post-publication notices will ordinarily be linked to the affected articles and assigned their own DOI when required.

Minor typographical or formatting corrections that do not affect the interpretation, attribution, or scholarly reliability of an article may be corrected without issuing a separate Crossmark update notice.

Preservation of the Scholarly Record

JSM recognizes that maintaining the publication record is essential to scholarly transparency and accountability.

Articles that have been corrected or retracted will ordinarily remain accessible, accompanied by clearly identified notices explaining their publication status.

The journal will avoid removing or replacing the original published record without adequate documentation, except when exceptional legal, ethical, privacy, or safety considerations require such action.

Where Crossmark has been implemented, metadata concerning significant publication updates will be maintained through Crossref to enable readers to identify changes to the status of published articles.

Reporting Publication Concerns

Authors, readers, reviewers, and other stakeholders who identify potential errors, ethical concerns, or other issues affecting published articles are encouraged to contact the JSM editorial team.

Reports should include the article title, DOI or publication URL, a description of the concern, and supporting information where available.

All reports will be assessed in accordance with the journal's editorial responsibilities and publication ethics standards.
